Mathematics Proficiency Test

Who Writes the Test

Learners wishing to enroll in the Mathematics - Intermediate Additional Basic Qualification course may take this test in lieu of official transcript(s) showing proof of successful completion of a minimum of two full university degree credit courses or the equivalent in the teaching subject.

NOTE: If you are required to write the Ontario College of Teacher’s Math Proficiency Test (MPT) to obtain your full certification, please note that our Math Proficiency Test does not satisfy this requirement, and cannot be taken in lieu of the Ontario College of Teacher’s MPT.

If you are unsure whether you should be taking this test, email a copy of your official transcript to oise.cpl@utoronto.ca and request that it be assessed for the Mathematics - Intermediate Additional Basic Qualification. We will contact you at our earliest convenience to confirm whether you qualify for the course or if you need to take the proficiency test.

Test Format

The math proficiency test is delivered completely online and consists of two parts:

PART A
Time Allotted: 45 minutes
Value: 20% of final grade
Format: Multiple Choice

PART B
Time Allotted: 45 minutes
Value: 80% of final grade, each question is graded using the ministry of education 4-level mathematics achievement chart.
Format: Open ended questions that requires you to provide answers in a separate document. Upon completion of Part B, learners are required to email their answers and supporting documents to OISE Continuing and Professional Learning. All documents must be submitted no later than 30 minutes after the end of the test to be considered.

  • Valid file formats: Word (doc, docx), Excel (xls, xlsx), PDF, and JPEG. Any other file format other than those listed will not be considered.
  • Learners may provide their answers on plain paper. Learners are required to scan or take a picture of their answers, ensuring that they are legible quality. Illegible notes will not be considered.

The passing grade for the proficiency test is 70% overall.

Accessing the Test

If you have registered for the test you will be contacted via email from OISE Continuing and Professional Learning with login instructions and test taking instructions.  You can expect this email between the registration deadline and the test start date. At the beginning of the test, learners are required to input personal information in order to proceed with the test.  The information required is listed below:

  • Learners' registered email.  This will be used as the access token to the test.
  • Learners' first name
  • Learners' last name
  • Learners' OCT number
  • Academic honesty declaration

Notes

Successful completion of this test is valid for 3 years from the date you took the test.  The Mathematics Intermediate Additional Basic Qualification in-class course offering is subject to cancellation each semester based on a minimum level of enrollment.

The Math proficiency test runs 4 times per calendar year, approximately one month prior to the registration deadline for the upcoming session (i.e. August, December, March, June).

If you register during the late enrolment registration period, you can expect your login credentials for the test within 24 hours.

NOTE:

The test can be written at any point during the testing period (starting April 8 until April 17, 2025 at 11:59 a.m. (noon) EST).

If you are taking this test to satisfy requirements for PK12-MATHI - Mathematics Intermediate, we recommend that you register for the course to secure your spot. You will be notified of your results via email prior to the upcoming session's registration deadline. If you do not successfully complete the test, you will be eligible for a full course fee refund.
