It is with deep respect and sadness that we share news of the passing of our colleague, Dr. Ronald E. Warner, clinical psychologist, Ryerson Professor Emeritus, and long-time educator in the field of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT).
Dr. Warner was a valued educator at OISE CPL, a respected figure in Canada’s counselling and mental health community and is well known for introducing and championing the solution-focused, strength-based approach to helping conversations. Over more than two decades, his work supported thousands of educators, counsellors, and professionals seeking practical, research-informed methods to enhance learning, wellbeing, and positive change.
A Distinguished Career Dedicated to Strength-Based Practice
Dr. Warner spent more than two decades advancing the Solution-Focused approach in clinical and educational contexts. His 2013 book, Solution-Focused Interviewing: Applying Positive Psychology, remains an important text for practitioners locally and internationally. He authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and served as the Chief Examiner for the Canadian Council of Professional Certification for Solution-Focused Therapists, Practitioners, and Coaches.
Much of his clinical work focused on promoting post-traumatic growth among first responders, veterans, and military families. At Canadian Forces Base Kingston, he established one of the first group-based Solution-Focused Post-Traumatic Growth programs, and his expertise was recognized through presentations to the Canadian Military and Veterans Health Research Forum.
Dr. Warner’s Contribution to OISE Continuing & Professional Learning
The Solution-Focused Brief Therapy Certificate Program came to OISE Continuing & Professional Learning in 2014–15, when the University’s School of Psychology concluded its continuing education offerings. We were honoured to welcome the program into our portfolio and to collaborate with Dr. Warner as its long-standing director and subject matter expert.
Over the decade that followed, hundreds of learners engaged with SFBT through OISE CPL. Dr. Warner brought deep expertise, warmth, and curiosity to his work with our team and to the development of learning experiences for our community. His contributions enriched our professional learning environment and supported the advancement of strength-based practice among educators and helping professionals.
With Gratitude
We extend our sincere condolences to Dr. Warner’s family, and to all whose work, learning, and lives were positively influenced by his teaching and clinical practice.
On behalf of the OISE CPL team, we honour Dr. Warner’s legacy and the meaningful contributions he made to our learning community and beyond.
