Start with Kolb
Karen rooted her talk in David Kolb's experiential learning cycle, a four-stage framework that moves learners through concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation. The key insight is not just that students do something hands-on, but that they reflect on it, make meaning from it, and then apply that meaning to something real. Without the reflection and application stages, it is just an activity.
The result, when the cycle is done well, is the development of transferable skills: communication, problem-solving, collaboration, creativity, and entrepreneurial thinking. Skills that matter regardless of where students end up.
400 Students, One Farm, and a Robot Tilling a Field
To bring this to life, Karen shared a recent initiative from York Region: a partnership between the York Region District School Board, Boreal Farms, and STEM Mines that gave over 400 students from grades 9 through 12 a half-day immersive experience in agritech.
The program was intentionally designed to reach students who would not typically see agriculture as a career pathway. Business, geography, family studies, and computer science classes were targeted specifically because the connection to farming would not be obvious to those students. By the end of the day, it was.
Students moved from classroom instruction about the history of farming to a live farm visit where they encountered drones, robotics, artificial intelligence, and regenerative growing practices. One moment that stood out: a robot tilling a field while students watched, before being invited to experiment with smaller-scale versions of the same hardware back in the classroom.
Two student reflections stuck with Karen. A business student, who had learned about cash crops, said she was going home to tell her parents they needed to start growing tomatoes. A family studies student said the experience made him want to ask his grandmother to teach him how to grow plants he could cook with. In both cases, the learning connected directly to the students' lives, which is exactly the point.
Practical Tips for Educators and Edupreneurs
Karen closed with advice for anyone looking to bring experiential learning into their own work, whether in a classroom or as part of an education-focused venture.
- Start by identifying a real-world gap. The agritech program worked because there is a genuine, pressing need for future-ready agricultural talent in York Region. Relevance cannot be manufactured; it has to be grounded in something real.
- Build strategic partnerships. Community partners often have access to funding, expertise, and resources that schools and organizations cannot access on their own. Karen pointed to the YMCA as one example: they offer free programming for schools, including elevator pitch workshops and Dragon's Den style events, at no cost. Libraries, industry groups, and local organizations are often more available than educators expect.
- Do not forget reflection. Build it into the experience throughout, not just at the end. Reflection is where learning actually happens.
- And start small. Experiential learning does not require a field trip or a major production. Shifting a single lesson to be more interactive, hands-on, or inquiry-driven, and then building in time to reflect and apply, is experiential learning. The scale can grow from there.
