What You'll Study
The TEFL Certificate is structured around three interactive units, each with two hands-on assignments that bring your learning to life.
Unit 1 - English Language Learning Around the World
Explore how English is taught in different cultures, and why people learn languages in unique ways. You'll create Learner Profiles and design simple, effective strategies that meet students where they are.
Unit 2 - Empowering Learners through Instruction and Assessment
Learn to plan engaging, inclusive lessons and use fair, practical assessments. You'll apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Differentiated Instruction, and experiment with technology and AI-enhanced tools that support language learning.
Unit 3 - Growing as an English Language Educator
Stay creative, current, and culturally responsive. Explore global trends, inclusive practices, and ways to collaborate and keep improving as a professional educator.

Course Requirements:
You'll need access to a computer, modern web browser, and reliable internet connection to complete online activities and submit assignments through Quercus, the University of Toronto's online learning platform.
Eligibility:
A bachelor's degree (in any subject) is recommended before enrolling. Most organizations that hire TEFL educators look for applicants who have completed their undergraduate studies.
Assessment & Certificate:
This is a pass/fail program - no letter or numerical grades are given. Upon successful completion, you'll receive a digital Certificate of Completion from OISE Continuing and Professional Learning at the University of Toronto.

Format
This is a fully online, guided self-paced program. This format allows you to complete the program at your own pace, in as little as 6-8 weeks, or up to a maximum of 6 months. A designated Course Guide will offer support, host office hours, assess your assignments, and provide feedback.
Registration Process

- Log into your Learner Portal and complete payment.
- You will receive your program access email on the Thursday following the registration deadline.
Program Access Timeline
Your 6-month access period begins on the date you receive your login credentials.
Important
- Access expires at the 6-month mark and cannot be extended.
- Once access expires, all progress, content and feedback will no longer be available. Please plan your learning accordingly.
T2202
T2202 tuition tax receipts are issued to eligible learners who are filing a Canadian tax return. The T2202 is issued based on the program's scheduled end date, not the date on which you complete the program, and will reflect the tax year corresponding to that scheduled end date.
