What You'll Study

The TEFL Certificate is structured around three interactive units, each with two hands-on assignments that bring your learning to life. 

Unit 1 - English Language Learning Around the World

Explore how English is taught in different cultures, and why people learn languages in unique ways. You'll create Learner Profiles and design simple, effective strategies that meet students where they are. 

Unit 2 - Empowering Learners through Instruction and Assessment

Learn to plan engaging, inclusive lessons and use fair, practical assessments. You'll apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Differentiated Instruction, and experiment with technology and AI-enhanced tools that support language learning.

Unit 3 - Growing as an English Language Educator

Stay creative, current, and culturally responsive. Explore global trends, inclusive practices, and ways to collaborate and keep improving as a professional educator.

Course Requirements:

You'll need access to a computer, modern web browser, and reliable internet connection to complete online activities and submit assignments through Quercus, the University of Toronto's online learning platform. 

Eligibility:

A bachelor's degree (in any subject) is recommended before enrolling. Most organizations that hire TEFL educators look for applicants who have completed their undergraduate studies.

Assessment & Certificate:

This is a pass/fail program - no letter or numerical grades are given. Upon completion, you'll receive a digital Certificate of Completion from the University of Toronto (OISE Continuing & Professional Learning).
