Course

PK12-IETPRAC

Internationally Educated Teacher Practicum

This practicum offers an introduction to classroom teaching practice and orientation to Ontario schools.

Participants observe and teach in K–12 classrooms while becoming familiar with school operations, routines, and expectations.

Before beginning in-class teaching, participants will complete 2–5 required pre-practicum observation days to connect with their Associate Teacher and get oriented to the school, followed by 20 in-class practicum days focused on supervised teaching.

This practicum is only open to individuals who have been formally required by the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) to complete a practicum through an Ontario Faculty of Education. If your OCT requirement exceeds 20 days (e.g., 40 or 60 days), additional sessions may be completed in future terms.

Prerequisites

To be eligible for this practicum, you must provide documentation from the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) confirming that a practicum is required for your certification or registration. This may include:

  • A Conditional Certificate of Qualification with a noted practicum requirement, or

  • An application or registration letter from the OCT stating the practicum requirement

In addition, you must:

  • Satisfy OCT language proficiency requirements, if applicable (i.e., if your OCT letter indicates that language proficiency has not yet been met, you must submit proof before your practicum begins)

  • Complete a Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) for the Vulnerable Sector with Mental Health Clearance

    • We strongly recommend initiating your VSS application at least 6–8 weeks before the practicum start date, as processing times vary by region

    • For guidance, visit: OISE Police Record Check Instructions or Police Contacts for details for your specific region

  • Complete the Ministry of Labour Health and Safety Awareness Training and save your certificate of completion:
