Construction Technology Grades 11 & 12

In this course the elements of residential construction will be explored as they apply to the broad-based area of Construction Technology.

Candidates will explore advanced construction techniques in carpentry, electricity, plumbing, drywall, painting, decorating and building design at the Senior level. Emphasis will be on curriculum design focusing on developing activity-based projects that engage a variety of design and problem-solving processes. Instructional strategies, including cooperative learning, problem-solving, classroom management for a safe classroom, and evaluation of performance-based learning provide a focus for the development of learning modules and other instructional methods appropriate for broad-based and integrated technology programs. The course includes evaluation of participants' technical proficiency and safe use of tools and equipment in Construction Technology.

This course is only offered in our July summer session

There is a $100 non-refundable materials charge for the course due on the first day of classes.

It is recommended that participants wear steel-toed footwear to class.  Safety glasses and shop coats may be provided.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites:

  1. Learners MUST have the grade 9/10 ABQ in one technological area listed on their Ontario College of Teachers Certificate of Qualification to be eligible for the grade 11/12 ABQ in the same subject area.
     
  2. Learners who meet the prerequisite above are eligible for the grade 11/12 ABQ in the same subject area if they meet the following prerequisites:
    • five (5) years of full-time, related and acceptable wage-earning experience (refer to list below); OR
       
    • three (3) years of full-time, related and acceptable wage-earning experience (refer to list below) AFTER successful completion of a related 2 year diploma program; OR
       
    • two (2) years of full-time, related and acceptable wage-earning experience (refer to list below) AFTER successful completion of a related 3 or 4 year degree program;
       
    NOTE:
    • Proof of related, full-time, wage-earning experience can be provided by uploading a completed work experience form to your application. Download the 'Related Work Experience for Technological Additional Qualification Courses' form.
       
    • Teaching experience is not considered acceptable related work experience. Work experience must be completed in blocks of at least  four (4) months;
       
    • Work experience is considered "part-time" if earned while attending school full-time, teaching full-time, or between semesters and summer breaks. Part-time work experience will not be counted toward the full-time acceptable related work requirement
       
    • Work experience cannot be counted toward more than one grade 9/10 or 11/12 technological education ABQ
       

Learners who meet the prerequisites listed above and have submitted their required documentation to OISE CPL will not be required to re-submit.

If the required documentation was not submitted to OISE CPL, it must be uploaded to the course application in order to be assessed.

Technological Education learners must have formal technical education and/or proof of competence and skilled, wage-earning experience in one or more of the following GENERAL areas (inquiries about experience in a specific field are assessed on a case-by-case basis by the assessment office):

  • General Carpenter
  • Electrician Construction and Maintenance
  • Plumber
  • Masonry
  • Civil Engineer
  • Heating and Cooling

PLEASE NOTE: Work experience cannot be counted toward more than one grade 9/10 or 11/12 technology ABQ; one (1) year of full-time work experience can be interpreted as 1,700 hours of work; if you were self-employed you must submit a sworn affidavit, a business license, and proof of income.

Recommendations

Successful completion is a final grade of C-

Upon successful completion of the course, a recommendation will be sent to the Ontario College of Teachers.

Construction Technology Grades 11 & 12 is facilitated in class and not viable for online delivery. Due to current Covid-19 restrictions, the course has been postponed for the 2021 Summer term and will be offered again in accordance with University of Toronto guidelines.
